Code of Conduct

- At the Maritime Rowing Club, we believe in the principles of equal opportunity for all. We expect all of our members to assist as we aim to ensure that anyone participating or wishing to participate in rowing is able to do so in a discrimination-free environment.

- Athletes and parents will at all times act with good sportsmanship towards both teammates and competitors as well as act responsibly and respectfully towards other club members, the boathouse, and the equipment.

- Use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco (including vaping), or performance-enhancing substances is not permitted at any time. Use of such substances on club grounds or while representing MRC at a regatta will result in immediate dismissal.  We strongly discourage the use of these substances by parents while representing the team.

- Inappropriate behavior (such as illegal acts, unsportsmanlike-like conduct, theft, fighting, and vandalism) is prohibited.  Illegal acts while on club grounds or while representing MRC at a regatta will result in immediate dismissal.

-  Conduct that results in harm, potential for harm, or the imminent threat of harm (including bullying, hazing, harassment, emotional misconduct, physical misconduct, and sexual misconduct) will not be tolerated and will be grounds for immediate dismissal as well as reported to the appropriate authorities.

- All athletes aged 18 and over, coaches, and program volunteers are, by law, required to complete SafeSport Training. Please visit https://usrowing.org/sports/2016/6/1/safesport.aspx for more information.

- All athletes are encouraged to:

  • Report honestly and immediately all incidents of bullying/cyberbullying/harassment to MRC staff.

  • Avoid becoming involved in bullying incidents, both in person and on the internet

  • Support rowers who have been or are subjected to bullying/cyberbullying/harassment.

  • Talk to MRC staff and/or parents about concerns regarding bullying/cyberbullying/harassment.

  • Please note that, when necessary, the MRC staff will involve the appropriate parents and/or authorities.

- MRC does not require athletes to have an online presence. We expect that if athletes choose to have one they will maintain a self-image of which they can be proud of for years to come. Inappropriate online behavior that involves MRC may result in suspension or dismissal from the program. Inappropriate behavior that does not directly involve MRC may be brought to the parents’ attention if necessary.

- Inappropriate use of language at the boathouse, on the river, or at regattas will not be tolerated.

- Athletes must inform their coach in person, by phone, or by SportsYou of an absence 48 hours in advance. Athletes cannot expect their seat to be held due to tardiness, absence, or having to leave early. We cannot guarantee that an athlete needing to leave early will be off the water on time.

- Athletes will be on time to practices and regattas. Practice time is not social time. All athletes are expected to be in proper workout attire and ready to work at the start of practice. Practice is not completed and athletes cannot leave until a coach has dismissed them.

- Athletes and parents will follow and respect all the rules of the club and river. This is a Federal channel and water safety rules are enforced.

- Athletes and parents will follow all parking policies and traffic patterns.

- Athletes' belongings must be stored in the designated place and should not be touched by any other rower. Disrespect of another's personal property could result in dismissal from the team. Please do not bring valuables to practice as we can not be responsible for lost or stolen items.

-  Athletes will follow proper Protocol at regattas including keeping shirts on and being dressed in proper attire to represent our team.

-  All completed forms (registration, waiver, emergency medical information, and signed code of conduct) along with payment must be completed no later than the end of the first week of each season. Athletes will not be permitted to participate in practice if this is not completed.

Athletes who violate the Code of Conduct will incur the following consequences:

First Offense:

The first violation will be a warning. Any MRC coach or any staff member can issue warnings. Staff members issuing warnings must inform the head coach.  The head coach will request a meeting with the athlete and their parents.

Second Offense

The second violation will result in an immediate dismissal from the program, without a refund.

If a coach or staff member judges that a violation is sufficiently dangerous or improper, they can dismiss an athlete from the program without a first warning and without a refund.
