Youth Learn to Row
New Canan Crew, organized and coached by the Maritime Rowing Club, offers Youth Learn-to-Row programs designed to help young rowers improve in all aspects of rowing including fitness, strength, flexibility, mental toughness, and discipline. Using our facilities both on and off the water we work to develop proper rowing technique, good boat handling skills, and water safety.
AGES: Under 14 Boys and Girls
Under 15 and Under 16 athletes may start here as well before moving into the appropriate age groups.
*Under 17 and Under 19 beginner athletes should reach out to us to discuss options for joining our U17/U19 teams.
“Rowing is more than a sport—it’s a foundation for confidence, character, teamwork, and lifelong health. Starting in middle school gives young athletes the time to develop skills, build friendships, and discover what they’re capable of both on and off the water.”
Builds lifelong fitness – Rowing develops cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, and coordination while being low-impact on growing joints.
Teaches discipline – Learning proper technique, showing up consistently, and working toward goals builds strong habits that carry into school and life.
Develops teamwork – In crew boats, every athlete must work together in perfect synchronization, teaching trust, communication, and accountability.
Boosts confidence – As athletes master new skills and see measurable improvements, they gain confidence in themselves and their abilities.
Improves mental toughness – Rowing teaches resilience, perseverance, and how to overcome challenges during training and competition.
Creates lasting friendships – Teammates spend many hours together, forming close bonds and a supportive community.
Enhances academic success – The time management, focus, and commitment required in rowing often translate into better study habits and classroom performance.
Provides opportunities for the future – Starting young allows athletes to develop skills that can lead to competitive high school rowing, collegiate rowing, and potential scholarship opportunities.
Encourages leadership – As athletes mature, they learn to lead by example, mentor younger teammates, and take responsibility for the team’s success.
Promotes a healthy lifestyle – Regular exercise, proper nutrition, and goal setting become lifelong habits.
