Rower Categories
ROWER CATEGORIES:
All High School Rowers:
- Any NCHS student who wants to join the program
- All rowers are expected to abide by the "Code of Conduct"
- Rowers can earn a Varsity letter by meeting the following criteria established by the coaches:
* minimum fitness requirements and
* 100% participation in designated competitive events and
* be in the First boat at CT States or place 1st in any event at CT States or
* perform at the highest level at other designated regattas
Novice:
- All freshman and new rowers
- Must achieve minimum knowledge of standards of safety, basic elements of boat configuration and rigging
- Gain exposure to rowing skills in both "sweep" and "sculling"
- Attendance at all practices and participation in designated competitive events is required
JV / Varsity:
- For any student who, at the discretion of the coaches, is capable of rowing at the Varsity level
- Must meet rowing fitness standards, such as erg scores, as determined by coaches
- Generally requires multi-season commitment
- Must achieve competitive levels of skills in both "sweep" and "sculling"
- Attendance at all practices and participation in designated competitive events is required
Advanced High School Rowers:
- For students who want to compete at the highest level of junior rowing. Selection at the discretion of the coaches
- Rowers may join this group by invitation only*
- A primary commitment to rowing, generally on a multi-season basis, likely to include summer training / racing
- Training and development will be integrated with Varsity program, but additional time commitment is required (Practice 6 days/week, 2 1/2 hours/day in season)
- Must meet minimum rowing fitness standards, such as erg scores or strength tests as determined by coaches
- Boats will be configured at the discretion of the coaches
- Boats may be comprised of students from multiple schools, but all students must be affiliated with Maritime Rowing through one of its scholastic programs
- Rowers may race under either the NCHS Crew or Maritime Rowing Club (MRC) designation, depending on circumstances of boat configuration
- Students should be mindful of other commitments (e.g. SAT's, prom, family commitments) before accepting a seat with this group
- Varsity letter will be conferred if all standards are met
